I have never read anything by this author before so when I saw the 1st chapter on a blog that promoted this book I kind of liked the writing and decided to pick it up. By chapter 5 I wanted the heroine to die a bloody horrible death and for the oh so manly pit fighter to burn in a house fire. I understand that you need content to fill the pages, but when that content is the exact same gosh darn conversation again and again and again, it becomes a teeeeeeeeeeeeensy bit annoying as hell. The female lead, Gilene, has a sucky lot in life. Since her power is that of illusion and to be able to survive being burned alive (an odd combo but okay) she drew the short straw in life and gets to be a sacrificial tribute from her village every single year until she’s just too weak and crippled to do it anymore so that the next one in line gets to do it. She hates it. She hates everything about it and having to wait for it every day of the year. Azarion has it worse. He was sold into slavery so now he gets to be a gladiator and personal chew toy of the empress who in some ways, is worse than the pit. He somehow figured out (because he can “seeâ€) that Gilene is special so he basically blackmails her into doing his bidding and helping his escape. But wait, there’s more. He wants her to help him reclaim his rightful place as chieftain of his people. Because after 10 years of being a gladiator slave you want to go back to your people and rule them like you were always supposed to. Gilene is NOT happy to comply but again, blackmail does the trick! And then the repetition starts. Every conversation, nearly every situation, bad or good “I must return to my people!†“You help me first†“But if I DIE who’ll get to live a miserable life in exchange for the less than grateful village chicks she’ll save through her conscripted sacrifice?†“I swear help me, I’ll get you to your people.†“Whaaa but what if we dieeeeee.â€As I said, by chapter 5, you WANT them to die. ALL of them. The empire that they live in is painted in colors and flavors that would make both Nero and Caligula take a step back and say “whoa there, calm down please.†Then I got a sense of GOT and some Buffy thrown in for that extra kick. I read the book. I felt like I was smacked in the face with the story and the characters left so so so much to be desired. It’s like a paint by the numbers but write by the numbers. Hard pass for books 2 and 3.
I love Draven’s writing but this isn’t for me. It is a well crafted believable tale of two people surviving terrible injustices. The violence of war and oppression is revealed without flinching. Rape is referred to pragmatically as a fact of life. There is some hope in the end but not enough for me. I found this world deeply disturbing and distressing. I pushed to the end because the story telling is captivating. But I read for joy and this didn’t have it for me.
This first novel in the Fallen Empire trilogy sets up the story and world of Gilene, Azarion, and their respective peoples who live bound by some truly malevolent rulers. Each year the exceedingly evil Krael Empire demands young women as sacrifices from outlying villages sent to the capital to die in a horrible manner. All this happens for the entertainment of the rulers and citizens as well as ostensibly appeasing the gods. After gladiators fight to the death, the next level of atrocity comes when the women are burned as tributes to the appreciative crowd’s roar. Gilene has selflessly gone to fill that role for the last five years. Using hidden powers as a fire witch that make her immune to the burning, Gilene saves other women from her village the horrible fate of brutality by the guards and gladiators, and then immolation. Azarion, the Prime Gladiator, has the magical ability to see through Gilene’s illusions. With Gilene’s reluctant help, Azarion foments an escape from the brutal fighting and the cruel, capricious whims of the Empress he has survived for the last ten years. Azarion forces Gilene to follow him back home to the Savatar people where he must face an enemy to reclaim a stolen birthright.Gilene is a less than willing accomplice spending much of their perilous trek back to Azarion’s homeland resisting her growing attraction to this man whom she feels should be despised. They have a difficult and dangerous road to follow with Empire soldiers after them to capture the Empresses’ favorite fighter to use and torture. Azarion’s attraction to Gilene is much more than her usefulness in helping him and his people. He sees not only her physical beauty despite scars from her gift as a fire witch, but an inner loveliness coupled with a generous and compassionate heart. Gilene suffers much on behalf of her village to save other women though she receives poor treatment in return. This well-crafted story is quite a heart pounder in places with characters the reader will come to care about very quickly. The action, adventure, and slow burn love story are very well paced and will take you on an intense and satisfying journey. Both Gilene and Azarion are people who refused to let their untenable situations destroy their souls or give in to the degradation over which they had no control. The great pleasures in Ms. Draven’s writing include an excellent tale, memorable characters, and fine storytelling with an emotional voyage taking readers on quite an intense ride. Ms. Draven’s fine attention to detail makes for a lush story of fantasy powered by real emotions to take the reader on a most wonderful journey.
So I've read a few of her other books, which have been on the whole, fairly decent. This was less so. It was like romance by route of stockholm syndrome. It left a bad taste for the whole thing. Yeah sure he threatened to horrifically kill everyone she loves in order to secure her assistance, then continues to threaten the lives of innocent people, and when that no longer works he falls back in the tried and true method of simply threatening her. Yet somehow it's all fine, he's a lovely person who OF COURSE she wants to marry and live with forever. Seriously WTF?
